Rondout Valley Central School District Celebrates Retirees, Tenures, and Distinguished Service
The Rondout Valley Central School District (RVSCD) Board of Education proudly celebrated the 16th annual Thomas King Distinguished Service Award recipients on May 21 at the High School Auditorium.
This award identifies and acknowledges the outstanding contributions put forth by Rondout Valley staff and establishes a tradition of excellence.
The event also recognized the District’s dedicated retirees and those receiving tenure this year. The three outgoing Board of Education members, Patricia Meoli, Dean Rylewicz, and Board President Carolyn Peck, were also recognized for their service.
The evening opened with the Board honoring those teachers earning permanent tenure. A tribute to the 2025-2026 retirees followed, as each individual was presented with a plaque for their dedication and years of service.
The highlight of the event was the reading of the nomination letters for the recipients of the Thomas King Distinguished Service Awards. In addition to listing the honorees’ many impressive achievements and qualifications, the letters featured many moving stories about the impact these professionals have had on their school community. The room was filled with laughter, tears, and applause.
Retiring Social Studies teacher Kelley O’Connor, one of this year’s award recipients, spoke about Thomas King, sharing her memories of him and the lasting impressions he made upon his students and his colleagues. The Distinguished Service Award was created in 2010, she noted, and King, a long-time Science teacher at the Junior High School, was one of the first honorees. In 2011, he unexpectedly passed away. Following his passing, many of his colleagues asked that the award be renamed in his honor.
The 2026 Thomas King Distinguished Service Award recipients are: Jessica Torok (Rondout Valley High School principal); Sara Decker (teaching assistant); Sheila Brown (teaching assistant); Dorothy Mayone (teacher); Anne Goetz (secretary); Kimberlyn McEvoy (secretary); Nicholas Bodnar (Technology teacher); Alisa Auchmoedy Finck (library media specialist); Kelley O'Connor (Social Studies teacher); Patricia Bennett (teacher); Cheril Simmons (teacher); and Christopher Frenza (director of technology). Frenza received the Board Choice award.

The stands were packed and school spirit was at an all-time high as the Rondout Valley Central School District celebrated their 5th Annual Special Olympics Spring Games.
