Tragic Loss of Rondout Valley Student

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the sudden passing of one of our Marbletown Elementary School students this weekend.

We are devastated over this loss and extend our heartfelt sympathies to Jaxon Lockwood’s family and loved ones.

Coping with a death, particularly when it is unexpected, is an emotional and personal experience. Students may have varying reactions to grief, as individuals of all ages respond differently to such loss.

We understand that this tragedy may affect students in all of our buildings. Our support teams are in place and our counselors, school psychologists, and social workers are available to assist anyone dealing with this loss.

Acknowledging the different stages we each experience in the grieving process can be helpful: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Children may respond to a traumatic event in various ways, including:

  • Restlessness, nervous behavior
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Difficulty sleeping, nightmares
  • “Clingy” behavior, fear of being alone
  • Asking questions over and over again
  • Remembering previous losses and events

It is important for children to express their emotions regarding this tragedy. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s reaction to this loss, please contact your building principal.

Thank you for your support and concern during this difficult time. Please keep the Lockwood family in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Paul Spadaro
Superintendent of Schools

There is nothing more important to us than ensuring the safety and well being of our students and staff. The District has implemented a multi-prong Comprehensive Safety Plan that includes School Resource Officers, security guards, tools for online-safety, and improvements to the physical security of all school buildings to prevent unauthorized access, as well as focusing on providing mental health support and creating a culture of community and belonging within our buildings.
