Kerhonkson Elementary Students Learn Emergency Preparedness

Fire Prevention Week kicked off at Kerhonkson Elementary School (KES) with an up close look at the tools and teamwork behind local first responders.

On Monday, October 6, students began the day with a fire drill before walking to the Kerhonkson Fire Department for a quick visit.

After students returned by bus to KES, Fire Prevention Day continued as students explored firetrucks and ambulances up close. Firefighters explained how various pieces of equipment are used in real emergencies, and students even had the chance to spray the firehose and take a seat on the ambulance gurney. First responders answered questions from students and shared what happens when they’re called to an emergency.

Inside the gymnasium, firefighters showed how they suit up for a call while explaining the purpose of each piece of gear. The importance of practicing fire drills both at school and at home was also emphasized. Students were taught lifesaving fire safety tips, such as how to “stop, drop, and roll,” and to remind adults to make sure smoke detectors work and have fresh batteries.

Students were also treated to an exciting demonstration by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit. Deputy Kyle Frano introduced his partner, K9 Officer Hydra, and wowed the crowd as Hydra showed off her impressive obedience and response skills.

Rondout Valley Teacher Creates Children’s Library to Inspire a Love for Reading in the Kerhonkson Community

Kerhonkson Elementary School is proud to announce the opening of the Little Ganders Library, a community book-sharing initiative for children led by Special Education teacher Gerald Cheers. Students had expressed the need for a nearby location where they could borrow books, Cheers explained, as there is no public library in the Town of Kerhonkson.
